Geologically, Cornetite is a rare copper phosphate hydroxide with the formula Cu₃PO₄(OH)₃. It forms as a secondary mineral in the oxidised zones of copper deposits, where copper-bearing minerals are transformed through exposure to oxygen-rich groundwater.

Its vivid blue to green-blue colour may appear as tiny prismatic crystals, rounded clusters or sparkling crusts across the matrix. First identified at the Star of the Congo Mine in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Cornetite specimens may also occur alongside minerals such as Malachite, Chrysocolla and Pseudomalachite.
