How to Perform a Smoke Cleanse with Yerba
What You’ll Need:
- A bundle of dried yerba (often called Yerba Santa)
- Matches or a lighter
- A fireproof dish (ceramic bowl, abalone shell, etc.) to catch ash
- Optional: Feather or fan to help move the smoke
1. Set Your Intention
- Yerba Santa is known for its healing and protective qualities. Take a moment to set an intention for your cleanse. What kind of energy or healing do you wish to bring in? You could say something like, "I cleanse this space and invite healing, protection, and peace."
2. Light the Yerba
- Hold your yerba bundle at a 45-degree angle and light it with a match or lighter. Let the flames catch for a few seconds, then blow them out gently, allowing the bundle to smolder and produce smoke.
3. Cleanse Your Space
-
Walk around the space you wish to cleanse, moving in a clockwise direction to bring in positive energy. Fan the smoke into the corners, around doorways, and over windows—areas where energy often lingers or becomes stagnant. As you do this, repeat your intention to reinforce the energy you're creating.
-
You could say something like, "I welcome healing energy into every corner of this space and protect it from harm."
4. Cleanse Yourself (Optional)
- If you’re feeling energetically blocked or weighed down, waft the smoke around your body, starting at your feet and working your way up to your head. Use your hands or a feather to guide the smoke around yourself, focusing on areas where you feel tension or imbalance.
5. Extinguish the Yerba
- Once you’ve finished your cleansing ritual, press the burning tip of the yerba into your fireproof dish, sand, or soil until the embers are fully extinguished. Make sure it’s completely out before leaving it unattended.
6. Reflect and Give Thanks
- After the cleanse, take a quiet moment to reflect on the ritual. Thank the yerba for its healing and protective qualities, and express gratitude for the positive energy you’ve invited into your space.
