Junk Journaling Workshop - For Kids!

Looking for a creative activity to share with your child? Join us at Our Satellite Hearts for a hands-on Junk Journaling Workshop with artist and educator Francesca Spillane (@francesca.s.spillane).

Designed for primary school-aged children to attend with an adult, this workshop explores junk journaling through collage, mark-making and mixed media. You and your child will use colour, textures, pictures and collected materials to create a journal spread together.

Francesca will guide you through the process, showing you how to layer materials and explore ideas step by step. No art or journaling experience is needed, and there’s no pressure to make things look a certain way. It’s a chance to experiment, get creative and enjoy making something side by side.

Your $70 ticket includes:

• A journal to work in (and take home)

• All materials & equipment supplied

• Guided instruction and creative prompts from Francesca

• Time, space, and support to complete your own junk journal spread

• First dibs on a new range of scrap-packs

Workshop details:

• Ages: 5-11 Years Old (with Parent Supervision)

• Duration: Approximately 2 hours

• Spots: Limited to 15 participants (plus their parent)

This is a relaxed, welcoming session designed to encourage creative confidence and self-expression—come as you are, leave with something meaningful.

About Francesca:

Francesca Spillane is an artist, educator, and curriculum designer based in Melbourne, Australia. Her mixed media practice is rooted in the art of collecting, gathering objects, photographs, sketches, and materials that she repurposes into richly layered collages. Often using found objects as stamps, she captures memories through texture and mark-making, creating visual narratives that echo the scrapbooks of her childhood.

Francesca works across media including paint, oil pastels, gouache, and watercolour, handcrafting her own collage papers both traditionally and digitally. Recently, she has begun exploring AI as a creative tool, using it to inspire style, visualise ideas and support inclusive practices for students of all abilities.

As part of the Zart Art Education team, Francesca designed curriculum and delivered professional development programs to empower teachers with creative, accessible approaches to learning. Her work reflects a deep belief that creativity should be accessible, meaningful and central to how we connect with ourselves and the world.
