How to Perform a Smoke Cleanse with Palo Santo
What You’ll Need:
- A stick of Palo Santo
- A candle or lighter
- A fireproof dish (such as a ceramic bowl or shell) to catch ashes
- Optional: A feather or fan to help spread the smoke
1. Set Your Intention
- Like with any cleansing ritual, it's important to start by setting an intention. What do you want to achieve with your smoke cleanse? Palo Santo is commonly used to clear negative energy and invite in positivity, so your intention might be something like "I cleanse this space of any negativity and invite in peace and joy."
2. Light the Palo Santo
- Hold one end of the Palo Santo stick and use a lighter or candle to ignite the other end. Let the flame burn for about 30 seconds to a minute, then blow it out, leaving the stick smoldering with smoke.
3. Cleanse Your Space
-
Move around the area you wish to cleanse, gently waving the stick to spread the smoke. Focus on corners, doorways, and windows where energy tends to collect. You can also use a feather or fan to help direct the smoke if you prefer.
-
As you move through the space, keep repeating your intention. For example, you might say, "I invite positive, peaceful energy into this space."
4. Cleanse Yourself (Optional)
- Just like with white sage, you can use Palo Santo to cleanse your own energy field. Starting at your feet, allow the smoke to waft around your body, moving upward to your head. This is especially helpful if you’re feeling energetically drained or stuck.
5. Extinguish the Palo Santo
- Unlike sage, Palo Santo doesn’t burn continuously, so it will usually extinguish itself after a short time. If it continues to smolder and you wish to put it out, press the burning tip into a fireproof dish or sand until it is completely out.
6. Reflect and Give Thanks
- After your cleanse, take a moment to reflect on the process and thank the Palo Santo for its assistance. Palo Santo is revered in many cultures for its ability to bring balance and healing, so a moment of gratitude helps honor the tradition.
